ANECT Employees Raising Money for Haiti
In January 2010, ANECT Fund Board started raising money for the victims of the Haiti tragedy. The company employees donated CZK 54,951 in total; the same amount was then donated by the company. The money will be sent to the SOS Haiti account of the humanitarian organization People in Need.
ANECT´s employees had a choice to either put their donation in one of the three donation boxes (located in Brno, Prague and Bratislava) or allow some money to be deducted from their February salary. Also ANECT Board of Directors supported the initiative and promised to match the amount raised by the employees, and so in the end the Haiti account of People in Need will receive CZK 109,902 in total.
People in Need intends to use the money to provide special nutrition to children, buy water storage tanks and everything needed for making drinking water, provide material for building shelters and the like. The money will also cover part of the air travel costs. People in Need also has its coordinators and an emergency medical team in the area.
The earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday 12 January was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake. It caused major damage to Port-au-Prince, Haiti´s two-million capital, and its surroundings. So far over 170,000 people have been identified as dead. The earthquake was the worst in Haiti in the last two hundred years.
The ANECT Fund Board has organized other socially beneficial activities as well. To name just a few: “ANECT Blood Donors´ Day” on which ANECT employees donated 16.2 liters of blood; Community Days during which ANECT staff helped various socially handicapped groups; or a benefit Photo exhibition the proceeds of which were later used for “Mikulasske zimni hratky”, a Christmas entertaining performance for mentally handicapped people.
